• Mow lawns 6 to 7.5 cm high. Why? For a few reasons, taller grass blades will promote deeper roots and it also gives greater shade to the soil locking in water and preventing evaporation.
  • Don’t fertilize during a drought. Actively growing plants use more water, and adding fertilizer can stress the root systems.

  • Try not to mow your lawn when the soil is wet. This could cause the already wet soil to compact under foot. This leads to the next point….
  • Keep foot traffic on the lawn to a minimum.
  • Stop bagging the lawn. Leaving grass clippings on the lawn will feed small amounts of nitrogen back to the soil.
  • Accept the fact that your lawn won’t be perfect but also remember it will come back too.
